The city of Chittagong can trace its roots back as far as the 9th century, when Arabs first conducted trade there. An influx of traders from the Middle East and the adoption of Islam subsequently led to the creation of many ornate mosques in Chittagong and strengthened ties throughout the region.

The Portuguese would later come to control the city and their influence can be seen best in Chittagong's Paterghatta district. As the British Empire expanded, Chittagong came under its power, a period in history that can still be seen in the city's many Victorian buildings.
