More About Attractions in Ahmedabad

As the largest city in the Gujarat state, Ahmedabad is a popular destination for Indian workers searching for employment in the fast-growing textile, chemical and IT industries. In addition, it has emerged as a tourism hotspot, not only serving as a welcome stop-over for domestic travellers heading to Mumbai and Rajasthan, but also holidaymakers across the world looking for a premiere up-and-coming destination.

Ahmedabad is packed with year-round activities and events, in addition to countless landmark attractions for tourists to explore. From superb museums and bustling night markets to fine restaurants and stunning monuments, visitors will find much to enjoy.

To better understand the city’s historical importance, visit the Sabarmati Ashram on the west bank of the Sabarmati River, which served as Ghandi’s headquarters during the struggle for Indian independence. Various strands of Ahmedabad’s past have also been pieced together at The City Museum (designed by pioneering architect Le Corbusier).

After a day of sightseeing, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere at one of Ahmedabad’s beautiful parks, such as the popular Victoria Garden. While you’re visiting the parks, don’t miss the Law Garden night market, a real Indian shopping experience, with everything from saris to costume jewellery available for sale at colourful stalls.

Ahmedabad Airport

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, India's eighth busiest airport, is located 15km north-east of Ahmedabad and also serves the metropolitan area of nearby city Gandhinagar.

The airport, which is named after statesman and former Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, spans an area of 4.55 square kilometres and deals with an average of 250 aircraft movements a day.

The airport encompasses four terminals, comprising an international, a domestic, a cargo and a secondary traffic terminal. The international and domestic terminals are connected by a 500 metre long underground moving walkway, reducing passenger transfer times and aiming to help establish the airport as a global transit hub.

The design of the new international terminal, completed in 2010, was selected after a competition and is enclosed by a distinctive roof that consists of a number of kite-shaped cut-outs forming skylights. The unique terminal, along with the rest of the airport, contains a variety of public facilities and conveniences, including a bank, bureau de change, public telephones, duty free shops, newsagents, restaurants and cafés.
