Attractions in Trivandrum

The city of Thiruvananthapuram is situated on the west coast of India. Also known as Trivandrum, its colonial name, it is the capital of the Indian State of Kerala. As well as being the political centre of the State, Thiruvananthapuram is an academic hub.

Thiruvananthapuram is built upon seven low hills and has a long history as a trading post in the region. Referred to by Mahatma Ghandi as the ‘Evergreen City of India’, its name is derived from the word, Thiru Ananthapuram, which means the ‘City of Ananth’, or the home of the sacred serpent Anantha, on which Lord Vishnu reclines. The temple of Vishnu reclining on Anantha (the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple) is an iconic landmark in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple is 260 years old and is considered to be the spiritual heart of Thiruvananthapuram. The main entrance is a 30m-tall, seven-tier Gopuram (gateway tower) and the whole structure is made from over 10,000 salagramam (sacred stones). The temple is only open to those of the Hindu faith, but you can follow the path around it to get good views of the building.

Thiruvananthapuram's Zoological Gardens are regarded as one of the most impressive in India. Set within miles of woodlands and lakes, the garden's animals live in enclosures that replicate their natural habitats. Trivandrum Airport

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, also known as Trivandrum International Airport, is the main airport in the state of Kerala, India, and is located less than 4 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram city centre.

It is the eighth busiest airport in India in terms of international passenger traffic and handles around 2.8 million passengers and 28,000 aircraft movements every year.

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport was first established in 1932, at which time it handled only domestic flights. In 1991, Trivandrum was officially upgraded to international airport status, making it the first airport of its kind in India to be located out with the main metropolitan cities.

Today, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has three terminals, all of which contain a range of passenger facilities. The newly built Terminal 3 is also entirely eco-friendly both inside and out and is home to a garden, water fountain and 40 different traditional plants which are designed to grow into a miniature forest.
