Attractions in Basra

Basra, Iraq's second-largest city next to Baghdad, serves as the principal port of the nation and occupies a unique place in the country's history.

Founded as a garrison in 636 AD, by Arab tribesmen, the city became a permanent settlement a few years later. Some of the original structures can still be found south of modern Basra.

The city also became a centre for culture in the years of the Abbasid Caliphate, as Arabic writer al-Jahiz called Basra home for some years and scientist Alhazen hailed from the area. Basra continued to flourish as a centre of culture in the Ottoman Empire and served as a strategic port in World War II.

In addition to being the home city of famous Islamic thinkers and artists, Basra also has its own special place in literary and religious works.

Sinbad the Sailor, hero of many stories originating from the Middle East, came from Basra, and it is speculated may be the site of the original Garden of Eden. Basra further occupies an important role in Islam as the site of the first mosque outside of the Arabian Peninsula.

Basra Airport

Basra International Airport is the second largest airport in Iraq, servicing a growing number of international and domestic passengers. 

It was originally built in the 1980s by foreign commercial partners working in tandem with the Iraqi government in order to better facilitate access to Basra - Iraq's only port and an area of great religious and historical importance as many scholars believe that Basra was once the site of the biblical Garden of Eden. 

The airport was originally used by a small number of VIPs and business people, but has seen a steady increase in passenger traffic particularly over the last ten years. 

Facilities at Basra International Airport are soon to be upgraded, with plans to improve the airport and upgrade air conditioning and toilet facilities already underway.
