Attractions in Nairobi

On flights to Nairobi you will be arriving in the capital and largest city of Kenya, East Africa. Nairobi is also the most populous city in East Africa, with some 3 million residents, and 12th most populous in all Africa. Nairobi is Etihad’s 72nd destination.

Founded in 1899 as a rail depot between Mombasa, on the east coast of Kenya, and Uganda, the city grew rapidly under British colonial rule and is today a major business and cultural hub. Kenya was granted independence in 1963 and Nairobi became the capital of the new republic.

The city lies on the Nairobi River, in southern Kenya, and lies 1795m above sea-level. Some attribute Kenya’s prowess in athletics to this high altitude advantage.

Nairobi has a subtropical highland climate, which means the altitude makes for some chilly evenings, especially in the June/July season when the temperature can drop to 10 °C. Holidays in Nairobi are popular from December to March, the warmest time of the year, when temperatures average the mid-20s during the day. However, as Nairobi is close to the equator, the differences between the seasons are minimal.

Soon after the arrival of your flight to Nairobi, you’ll be thrown into the hustle and bustle of this vibrant city. Be warned that the traffic in the city can be quite bad.

There is much to do in the city in the form of restaurants, night life and sports events, but most tourists on a trip to Nairobi head out to the nearby safari parks and animal sanctuaries.

A holiday in Nairobi is great for safaris because of the close proximity of the airport and the parks. No other safari park in the world is as close to an airport – hence Nairobi is known as the safari capital of Africa.

As such, tourism is big as visitors from around the world travel to Nairobi to marvel at the African landscape, diversity of animals and culturally rich citizens.

Surrounding the city is Nairobi National Park, which comprises 113 km² of plains, cliffs and forest. The Park is home to lions, giraffes, hippos, cheetahs, rhinos and much more.

No trip to Nairobi is complete without visiting the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, close to the Nairobi National Park, and the Giraffe Centre in Lang'ata, right outside Nairobi.

Nairobi Airport

Named after the first Kenyan prime minister and president, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (also known as the Embakasi Airport and Nairobi International) is the largest airport in Kenya, and the busiest in East Africa.

The airport has three terminals that service arrivals and departures - terminal 1 and 2 handling international passengers and terminal 3 handling domestic passengers.

Passenger facilities include ATMs, departure lounges, snack bars, restaurants and a pub.

The airport will soon be undergoing a period of construction and refurbishment to increase capacity to 9 million. It is thought that the airport will double in size under this programme of works and that new hotel accommodation, parking and taxiways will be developed. A second runway is also thought to be part of the planned renovations.
