Attractions in Lagos

Those taking flights to Lagos for the first time will be amazed by the energy and non-stop activity in this huge metropolis. Lagos is the biggest city in Nigeria with around 8 million residents, second biggest city in Africa (after Cairo), fastest growing city in Africa and seventh fastest growing city in the world. No small wonder then that many outsiders are more familiar with Lagos than with Nigeria's capital, Abuja, in the county’s north.

Lagos is located on the Atlantic Ocean coast and consists of a string of islands within the Lagos Lagoon connected to the mainland by bridges. Lagos Lagoon, 50km long and up to 13km wide, is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by long sand spits such as Bar Beach.

Over time the city has expanded inland, west of the lagoon, and now has suburbs more than 40km northwest of the central Lagos Island. Most of the population live on the mainland, where the majority of businesses are also located. Lagos Mainland districts include Ebute-Meta, Surulere, Yaba (where the University of Lagos is located) and Ikeja, site of Murtala Muhammed International Airport and capital of Lagos State.

However, Lagos Island and Victoria Island are also two major urban centres and are often where people taking business trips to Lagos have their meetings.

Getting around Lagos involves using taxis or buses on its extensive road network, or by trains and ferries. You can certainly expect to see a lot of water on a flight to Lagos!

Lagos is famed throughout Africa for its music and night life. Music styles such as Nigerian hip-hop, highlife, juju, fuji, and Afrobeat all originated in this city. Yaba and Surulere districts have traditionally been the areas most popular for music but recently Victoria Island has become the place to be. If on holiday in Lagos its worth exploring these various areas as each has its own distinct character.

Lagos is also well known for its thriving film industry, sometimes referred to as “Nollywood”. Many films are shot in Festac, located along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Many of those taking flights to Lagos are interested in exploring its spectacular selection of homemade crafts. On Lagos Island, the National Museum at Onikan houses a wide range of exhibits of Lagos's ancient civilisations. Also on Lagos Island, the Jankara Market is a great place to bargain for locally dyed cotton, handwoven cloth, herbs and leather goods.

If its beaches and sun you’re after on your holiday in Lagos, head to the trendy Eleko Beach, 60km east of the city, where you can get away from it all in your own rented beach hut.

No trip to Lagos is complete without a visit to the Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC), east of Lagos Island on the Lekki Peninsula. Run by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, LCC has 78 hectares of wetlands set aside for wildlife viewing. From raised walkways, you can see monkeys, crocodiles and a diverse range of birds.
