Attractions in Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the biggest city in South Africa, but is not one of the country’s capital cities. There is a huge diamond and gold trade in Johannesburg, due to the nearby Witwatersrand hills which are mineral rich, and this alone attracts a lot of visitors from overseas.

In the 1930s Johannesburg underwent massive reconstruction with new buildings being raised throughout the area.

By the 1970s the old Johannesburg was completely unrecognisable with tower blocks and high rise buildings now scattered throughout the city. During the new construction many luxury homes were also built and in present day Johannesburg there is a vast difference in living conditions ranging from small shanty huts to luxurious, wood surrounded suburbs.

When booking your flights to Johannesburg and planning your itinerary, you may want to consider visiting some of the following attractions.

Apartheid Museum
The Apartheid Museum first opened its doors in 2001. The museum only came about after various casino licenses were being offered to the highest bidders in 1995 with the stipulation that the bidders must state clearly how they would improve tourism to Johannesburg. One of the bidders for the casino license cleverly put forward a suggestion of an apartheid museum to be situated nearby the casino and thus won the bidding! There are various exhibitions on display including the life and times of Nelson Mandela.

Gold Reef City Theme Park
The park has a selection of rides for both adults and children alike, a 4d theatre, an animal farmyard, an amphitheatre and various themed adventure areas. Some of the rides available include the famous Tower of terror, Jozi Express, The Anaconda, Raging River Rapids, Miner's Revenge and Golden Loop. The latest addition to the park is Jozi's story of gold which is a historical walkthrough of how Johannesburg came to be, how the original gold was discovered and how that affected the day to day lives of the local inhabitants.
