About Turkey

Located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhchivan), Iran, Iraq and Syria. In addition, Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea are to the south of Turkey, the Aegean Sea is to the west, and the Black Sea to the north.

More about Turkey

The country wields significant economic, political and military influence over its neighbours and across the wider region. Its long history of trade and migration has given it a rich cultural heritage which is plain to see on any visit to Turkey.

Around 75 percent of the country’s 70 million inhabitants are ethnic Turks and some 15 percent Kurds, while the remainder are made up of Armenians, Greeks, Abkhazians, Albanians, Georgians, Pomaks (Bulgarians) and others. Many of these ethnic groups travelled to Turkey during the era of the Ottoman Empire, which peaked in the 16th and 17th centuries. The modern Republic of Turkey was established by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923 and the country is now a democratic, secular constitutional republic.

Turkey is a large country with a diverse topography and climate. With an area of 783,562 square kilometres, Turkey is the 37th-largest country in the world. Holidays in Turkey can be quite varied, depending on which region you visit. While Ankara is the capital, on Etihad flights to Turkey you will land in Istanbul, the largest city and the country’s economic, financial and cultural centre.

More about Turkey destination guide

Highly popular among tourists and Turks is a visit to Istanbul’s Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii). The hugely impressive Hagia Sophia Museum / Church (Ayasofya) is a great example of Byzantine and Islamic art. It was the largest cathedral in the world for over 1,000 years before being converted to a mosque. Across the road from Hagia Sophia is the Yerebatan Sarayi (Underground Cistern), an incredible engineering feat hidden beneath the streets of Istanbul.

Many tourists visit Turkey to go to the Pamukkale Thermal Pools for some thermal healing, or the Goreme National Park (Goreme Milli Parklar) in central Cappadocia for spectacular lunar-like landscape and cave dwellings. Adventurers taking flights to Turkey might opt to trek up Mount Ararat, a huge inactive volcano in Eastern Turkey, or kayak in the white waters of the Çoruh River Valley.

Other great places to visit in Turkey include the archaeological site of Troy, the ruins of Ephesus, Mount Nemrut (Nemrut Dağı) and Lake Van. No holiday in Turkey is complete without at least one visit to a Turkish bath (particularly the famed Cemberlitas Hamami in Istanbul) and attendance at a Whirling Dervishes show.
