About Brazil

Brazil is ranked the largest country in South America, both in terms of geographical size and population. Indeed, covering a massive 8.5 million square kilometres and with around 195 million inhabitants at last count, it’s also the fifth largest country in the world.

As with most countries of this size, tourists can expect a multitude of climate zones, depending on the exact location of their holiday. If your trip to Brazil is heading to a southern destination, such as São Paulo, then it’s common to have the full spectrum of winter, summer, spring and fall. If you venture nearer the equator in the north, on the other hand, then two seasons can generally be expected – wet and dry.

Brazil has almost 7,500 kilometres of coastline on the east, which is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, the country is well-known for having thousands of pristine beaches in destinations such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and Salvador. It’s little surprise, therefore, that relaxing on the beach is a popular option after taking a flight to Brazil... and it’s a favourite pastime of the locals too!

A variety of sporting activities are also cherished by Brazilians. Football (soccer) is undoubtedly the most favoured, with the country’s national team ranked among the best in the world, while volleyball, basketball, motor racing, and martial arts have attracted large fan-bases too. In addition to having a love affair with beach life and sports, Brazil is passionate about music and dance, with unique local styles such as samba, bossa nova and choro. Heading east to the coastal cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador (each a tourism magnet in its own right), visitors can relax, sunbathe or play volleyball at the beach, or coincide their holiday with one of Brazil’s world-renowned carnivals. Here, locals (also known as ‘paulistas’) and tourists unite to celebrate life with street parties, outdoor parades, musical concerts and, naturally, a generous amount of samba dancing and outlandish costumes.

Travelling further south on a holiday in Brazil, another collection of pristine beaches can be found in some of country’s more affluent states, such as Santa Catarina, while the breath-taking Iguaçu Falls and surrounding national parks are located near the border with Paraguay and Argentina. Also nearby are the historical ruins of Missões, located in the heart of Rio Grande do Sul, which feature heavily in the wish-list of attractions for visiting tourists.
