About Egypt

Covering more than one million square kilometres, Egypt is located in North Africa, close to Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Syria. Flanked by the Mediterranean Sea, it is the 15th most inhabited country in the world, with an estimated population of 83.7 million people.

Although the local economy has traditionally focused on agriculture and trade, Egypt has also emerged as a leading regional hub for other industries, such as oil and gas, logistics and manufacturing (especially textiles, ceramics and food processing).

Egypt attractions

Egypt is packed with historical attractions for visitors to explore, such as the twin temples of Abu Simbel (popular for its daily light-and-sound show), the ancient tombs of Abydos, the temple complex of Karnak, and the underground graves at Valley of the Kings.

However, the country’s most famous attraction is the Pyramids of Giza, located on the outskirts of Cairo. The breath-taking complex, which is the last surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the World, includes three main pyramids that serve as tombs for different kings. Giza also contains the world’s biggest monolith statue, the Great Sphinx, depicting a large mythical creature with a human head and lion’s body.

For historical insights in a more central location, don’t miss a visit to Cairo’s medieval district, where you will find an ancient collection of mosques (including one of the largest mosques in the world – Ibn Tulun), churches, hammams, tea shops, Al-Azhar University (considered the oldest university in Egypt), and the 14th century Khan-el-Khalili market (‘souk’), where vendors sell perfume, carpets, precious stones and more. The Egyptian Museum is another great place to visit in Cairo, with over 120,000 different artefacts, from jewellery and pottery to mummies and royal treasures.
