Although the Indian economy has traditionally focused on agriculture and trade, the country has emerged as a rising international powerhouse, with fast-paced growth in the manufacturing, healthcare, technology and automotive industries. What’s more, tourism has become a major contributor to the GDP, fuelled by India’s hospitable culture, mouth-watering food, stunning landscapes and world-famous attractions. India has an impressive collection of historical landmarks, with 29 World Heritage Sites located across the country. A prime example is the world-famous Taj Mahal, which attracts more than three million visitors from across the world each year. A striking example of Mughal architecture, the white marble structure was completed around 1643 in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, the third wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who passed away during childbirth in 1631.

India’s other heritage sites include the ancient ruins in Hampi, Red Fort Complex in New Delhi, and Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra.

Highlighting the multi-cultural nature of India, the country is packed with religious monuments from various different faiths, such as the Jama Masjid (the country’s biggest mosque, located in Delhi), Meenakshi Temple (often described as the most impressive Hindu monument in Tamil Nadu), and Golden Temple (a prominent Sikh Gurdwara in Amritsar), which attract a large crowd of tourists, as well as local residents.
