Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, India's eighth busiest airport, is located 15km north-east of Ahmedabad and also serves the metropolitan area of nearby city Gandhinagar.
The airport, which is named after statesman
and former Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, spans an area of
4.55 square kilometres and deals with an average of 250 aircraft movements a
day.
The airport encompasses four terminals,
comprising an international, a domestic, a cargo and a secondary traffic
terminal. The international and domestic terminals are connected by a 500 metre
long underground moving walkway, reducing passenger transfer times and aiming
to help establish the airport as a global transit hub.
The design of the new international terminal,
completed in 2010, was selected after a competition and is enclosed by a
distinctive roof that consists of a number of kite-shaped cut-outs forming
skylights. The unique terminal, along with the rest of the airport, contains a
variety of public facilities and conveniences, including a bank, bureau de
change, public telephones, duty free shops, newsagents, restaurants and cafés.
