Mumbai is considered one of India’s biggest ‘mega cities’, with an approximate population of 12.5 million people. Built on seven islands, it has been ruled by several indigenous kingdoms before the Portuguese took over in 1534 and ceded to the British East India Company in 1668.

From the 18th century onwards, it became a major trading port and remains the commercial heart of India to this day, while serving as the epicentre of the country’s fashion and film industries. Huge numbers of people from across India have settled in Mumbai (previously known as Bombay), attracted by the job opportunities and fast pace of life offered in this chaotic and fascinating city.

Attractions in Mumbai

Although India has been independent since 1946, there are still many reminders of British rule within its cities. One of the most famous examples is the Gateway of India, a grand basalt arch that overlooks Mumbai Harbour. The landmark, which was built to commemorate the 1911 royal visit of King George V, is often described as the ‘Taj Mahal of Mumbai’ and has emerged as a leading tourist attraction and meeting point.

A ferry service is operated from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, named after a large stone elephant that was moved to the nearby Victoria Gardens in 1814. The popular island features a variety of cave temples, the biggest of which is dedicated to the god Shiva, featuring a six-metre tall statue of him in Sadashiva form.

If you’re passionate about arts and culture, a number of India’s most famous museums and galleries are found in Mumbai too, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, Prince of Wales Museum, Jehangir Art Gallery, and Nehru Centre Art Gallery.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, named after the 17th century Maratha Emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji, is the primary international airport serving Mumbai and the second busiest airport in South Asia. 

There are five operating terminals at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, spanning a total of 19 square kilometres and handling more than half of South Asia’s air traffic. Of these five terminals, two are focused on passenger services, with airport-operated coaches shuttling transit travellers between the international and domestic terminals.

On average, between 30 and 40 million passengers and 700,000 tonnes of cargo are handled each year at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. It has previously been ranked fourth best in the world for its facilities, including food courts, spas and salons. In addition, the airport has received a number of awards and honours from Airports Council International, including the accolade of best airport in India and the third-best airport in the world in the 25-40 million passengers category.
