Baghdad has long been an important regional centre; the Abbasids originally constructed the city in the 8th century AD to serve as capital of the caliphate. The Baghdad region's history spans even further back, as the city replaced nearby Ctesiphon and Seleucia, which itself replaced the ancient city of Babylon.

The founders designed Baghdad as a Round City, with fortifications around a central area, similar to Erbil in Kurdistan. Baghdad flourished under Abbasid rule, serving as a centre for business and trade as well as political matters and intellectualism.

Following the caliphate's demise after the sack of Baghdad, by Mongol invaders, the city entered a period of decline and changed hands between many empires, including the Ottomans, who ruled the city until 1917.

With such a rich history, Baghdad has many attractions celebrating its culture and history. The National Museum of Iraq still contains many artefacts from throughout the region's history and the 13th century Abbasid Palace, with its intricate brickwork and arches, overlooks the Tigris River.

In memorial of latter-day skirmishes, the Hands of Victory and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier remind residents and visitors of the human toll of the Iran-Iraq War.
