Attractions in Milan

Located in northwest Italy, around 30 miles south of the Alps, Milan is the country’s second-largest city, with an approximate population of 1.35 million people. In contrast to the capital city of Rome, which is the heart of national politics and represents the country’s history, Milan has emerged as Italy’s main commercial, financial and industrial centre, in addition to serving as a leading international hub for the fashion industry.

What’s more, tourism has emerged as a major contributor to the local economy, with over two million people visiting Milan each year, arriving from all corners of the world. For some, the main attraction is Milan’s breath-taking range of cultural attractions, such as museums, opera houses and historical sites, while others are drawn to the impressive shopping malls and mouth-watering cuisine on offer at restaurants and cafes.

Attractions in Milan

Cultural attractions have been placed at the heart of Milan’s tourism market, a prime example of which is the 600-year-old Milan Cathedral (or ‘Duomo di Milano’). As the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, with enough capacity for 40,000 people, the structure took around five centuries to build and features a stunning variety of artwork, statues and monuments. If you’re not afraid of heights, don’t forget to visit the cathedral’s rooftop (accessed via a special elevator) for amazing views of the city.

Milan’s other cultural attractions include Santa Maria della Grazie (an ancient convent that houses Leonardo Da Vinci's famous painting, ‘the Last Supper’), Basilica di Saint Ambrose (one of Milan's oldest churches), Castello Sforzesco (featuring a museum that exhibits Michelangelo's last sculpture, ‘the Rondanini Pietà’), and La Scala Opera House.

Milan has also emerged as a world-class shopping destination, especially in terms of high-end designer goods. Many of the leading fashion boutiques are located in a square known as the Quadrilatero d'Oro ('rectangle of gold'), where brand names such as Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Valentino and Hermès rule. Other well-known retail areas include Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (a glass-roofed arcade built in 1867, making it one of the oldest shopping centres in the world), Via Dante, and 10 Corso Como.

Milan Airport

Milan Malpensa Airport is the largest of three airports serving the Milan metropolitan area, offering a seamless connection to various destinations around the world.

The facility, which is owned and operated by SEA, has emerged as one of the busiest international airports in Europe, handling over 19 million passengers each year, in addition to a significant volume of cargo traffic.

Located around 40 kilometres northwest from central Milan, it has two terminals, with most international flights at Terminal 1 (including Etihad Airways), while the majority of domestic and regional flights are based at Terminal 2. Passengers have access to a free shuttle bus, which travels between the terminals every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day.

A range of onsite facilities is available at Milan Airport, such as duty free shops (selling items such as perfume, jewellery, clothing and souvenirs), money exchanges and passenger information desks. In addition, there are several cafes and restaurants before and after the security checkpoints, while Wi-Fi is offered in both terminals.

What’s more, Etihad Airways offers access to SEA Club Lounge at Milan Airport for our Pearl Business and Diamond First Class guests.
