Jeddah is the second biggest city in Saudi Arabia and is situated on the edge of the Red Sea (Jeddah is also the biggest sea port on the Red Sea), to the west of the country. Jeddah is used as the main gateway to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam. There are over 3 million people living in Jeddah.

It is thought that Jeddah was originally founded as a small fishing village around 505 BC, although some excavations have found evidence that Jeddah was actually inhabited by people in the Stone Age.

Jeddah, now, is considered to be the most cosmopolitan of all Saudi cities. Millions of people have moved through Jeddah over recent years and come have chose to settle in the city, including backgrounds from Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Africa.

Jeddah Fountain
Jeddah Fountain, also known as King Fahd's Fountain, is the tallest fountain in the world. The water reaches to over 850 feet above the Red Sea level.  The fountain was originally built in the 1980's and officially began operating in 1985. Water used for the fountain is taken directly from the Red Sea, rather than the normal freshwater. The fountain is illuminated by more than 500 spotlights at night visible from the all around Jeddah.

Naseef House
Naseef House is located in the old city of Jeddah, Souk al-Alawi, and is famous throughout the city. The house was owned by one of the oldest and most prosperous trading clans in the area, the Naseefs. King Abdul Aziz (ibn Saud), the founder of modern day Jeddah, was said to have stayed often at Naseef House. The king actually installed wide ramps in place of stairways so that messengers could ride their camels all the way to the top floor.

Jeddah Airport

King Abdulaziz International Airport is located 19km north of the city of Jeddah and is Saudi Arabia's busiest airport, serving 13 million yearly passengers. 

Opened in 1981 after seven years of construction, the airport is named after King Abdulaziz Al Saud and occupies an area of 15 square kilometres. 

King Abdulaziz International Airport contains north and south passenger terminals, as well as Royal Saudi Air Force facilities and an exclusive Royal Terminal. The airport also encompasses a specially designed Hajj Terminal, built to accommodate the many travellers who pass through the airport on a pilgrimage to nearby Mecca (Makkah). 

The Hajj terminal is amongst the world's largest air terminals and can accommodate up to 80,000 passengers at one time. 

The airport contains a range of onsite facilities including shops, restaurants and worship areas and is currently undergoing major redevelopment. The completed project will result in three new terminal buildings that will be able to accommodate up to 80 million passengers each year.
