Sudan is the third largest country in Africa, geographically, with an area of just under 2 million km2. It has a population of just over 30 million inhabitants, mostly settled around the fertile Nile Valley, which divides the country into eastern and western areas.

Officially known as the Republic of Sudan, Sudan is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world, with some 400 ethnic groups speaking more than 200 languages or dialects. A holiday in Sudan will reveal its rich breadth of cultures from town to town. In particular, Arab culture dominates the country and 70 percent of Sudanese are ethnically descendants of Arab migrants.

If you’re going on holiday to Sudan, you’ll want to kick off your touristic activities in Khartoum, which forms one unit with Omdurman, the previous capital, and Khartoum North to make a ‘three-town capital’. The camel market in Omdurman is popular with visitors, as is the Arab souk, where all kinds of handicrafts can be found at great prices.

The National Museum is another must-see on a visit to Sudan. Get a snapshot of the country’s long history with archaeological treasures dating past 4,000BC. Those more interested in modern history should visit the Khalifa's House Museum, where a special focus is put on the reign of the Mahdi (1881-1899).

Getting away from the capital, just north of Khartoum, are the iconic Pyramids of Meroe – Sudan’s most popular tourist site. Quite different in style to the famous pyramids in Egypt, these steep-sided brick buildings are located in clusters of a dozen near the archaeological sites of Naqa and Musawarat Es Sufra.

Families on holiday in Sudan enjoy visiting the Dinder National Park on the Ethiopian border. Covering 6,475km2, the park is one of the biggest in Africa and boasts and impressive variety of wild animals, including lions, leopards, giraffe, antelopes and more.

Adventure-seekers arriving on flights to Sudan should head to the Red Sea for some superb scuba diving. Three towns to visit to witness the richness of the reefs yourself are Port Sudan, Suakin and the Arous Tourist Village.

You may also want to head up to Erkowit, which is 1,200 metres above sea level, for its rich vegetation and cultural charms. Or climb Jebel Marra, which, at just over 3,000 metres, is the highest peak in the Darfur region of western Sudan. The entire area boasts stunning scenery, with waterfalls and volcanic lakes along the way.
