London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom and home to over 7.6 million people. Situated in the south-east of the country, it’s one of the UK’s most popular destinations for tourists and business people.

London was founded by the Romans and was known originally as Londinium. Today it is the political and economic centre of England, and it’s where you’ll find the Houses of Parliament and the Queen’s main city residence, Buckingham Palace. Situated on the banks of the River Thames, London is divided into 32 boroughs, which include the City of London, the City of Westminster, Camden, Greenwich, and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Buckingham Palace
London is well-known for its historic buildings, one of the most famous of which is Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s official city residence, which is located in the City of Westminster. You can visit the Queen’s Gallery, which holds art exhibitions throughout the year, and during the summer, you can see the Changing of the Guard ceremony, visit the Royal Mews and take a tour of the State Rooms. Other historic London attractions include the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.

Natural History Museum
London is also home to a wide range of museums and art galleries, such as the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern. A number of London’s lesser known, but equally fascinating museums, including the Charles Dickens Museum and the Foundling Museum, are located within an area known as Museum Mile. Walk this route from the Euston Road to the River Thames and explore the Royal Opera House or visit the British Library, which houses more than 14 million books as well as other documents, including the Magna Carta.

London Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport, located 22km west of central London, is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the third busiest in the world.

London Heathrow services more international passengers than any other airport in the world and nearly 70 million travellers a year pass through its terminals, flying to 170 destinations worldwide.

Heathrow is owned and operated by BAA Limited and has five terminals. Terminal 5 was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008 and is the newest terminal in the airport, although Terminal 2 is currently undergoing major reconstruction. Once open, the new Terminal 2 will be similar in size to Terminal 5, which spans more than 360,000 square metres over two concourses.

Heathrow's terminals are connected by buses and the London Underground tube. A wide range of facilities are available in each terminal, including a variety of shops, bars and restaurants as well as post offices, showers and dedicated worship areas.
