Attractions in Minsk

Minsk is the capital of Belarus, it is located on the Niamiha and Svislach rivers. Minsk is one of Europe's oldest cities, dating back to the 10th century. Most of the structures in Minsk were destroyed in World War 2, after which Soviet architects were tasked to rebuild the city in a newer, more modern, style to become a showcase Soviet City.

Minsk was rebuilt with pristine squares and boulevards set around the city in between grandiose structures looming overhead. Scattered around the city are various tributes to the former Soviet regime including many soviet symbols, war memorials and many statues of Lenin. The population totals almost 2 million and the locals take a huge amount of pride in their city.

Cathedral of the Holy Ghost
Built as a convent for Bernadine nuns in 1642, the Cathedral of the Holy Ghost is one of Minks' long remaining buildings. The Cathedral has gone through some tumultuous changes including being closed down by the Bolsheviks, damaged by fire in 1741 and being turned into a monastery at one point! There are various collections for perusal at the Cathedral; one of the most famous exhibits is the Icon of the Mother of God.

Khatyn memorial
Khatyn memorial is a tribute to Belarusians who were killed in World War 2, it is situated in the north east of Minsk. The memorial has bells with 26 chimneys symbolising the houses in the village and the bells ring out every hour. There is also a 6 metre tall statue, made of bronze, which is dedicated to the only man who survived the slaughter of the locals, by the Germans, in World War 2.

Minsk Airport

Minsk International Airport is the principal airport servicing the Republic of Belarus, and is located in Kastrychnitski, just 26 miles east of the capital city Minsk.

Connecting Minsk with 39 destinations in Russia, Europe and the Emirates, Minsk international is capable of accommodating 5 million passengers, although it is thought that the airport currently handles little more than 1.2 million international and domestic passengers per year.

Opened in 1982, the airport was purpose built to replace the old Minsk-1 airport (which is currently out of service and no longer accepts passenger services).

The airport has recently undergone a series of renovations which have refreshed both Minsk International's aviation equipment and passenger areas. Passenger facilities now include free short term parking to the front of the terminal, car rental outlets, eateries and lounge and shopping areas. There is also hotel accommodation and a hair dressing salon on site.
