Attractions in Brussels

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and over 1000 years old. The European Union decided that Brussels should be its administrative centre, hence Brussels is known as the capitol of Europe.

There is a mix in population of French and Flemish contributing to its diverse culture and this is a great influence on the architecture too. Both Dutch and French are the official languages of the city, it is however a very cosmopolitan city and, as such, many different cultures live closely and a different language can be heard on every street corner!

The architecture in Brussels is quite diverse, from magnificent Gothic Cathedrals to beautiful art deco and art nouveau houses. The Grand Place is the historic market square at the heart of Brussels; it offers a spectacular Gothic Town Hall and delightful guild houses.

The Musical Instruments Museum (Musee des Instruments de Musique)
The museum was opened at the end of the 19th century and houses over 7000 instruments! The instruments have been separated into sections and there is a 'most popular' section with 1200 of the interesting instruments on display again separated into 4 galleries. Inside the museum is a rooftop restaurant, a library, a museum shop, a workshop area and an impressive concert hall. The museum attracts over 130,000 visitors a year.

Grand Place (Grand-Place)
During her trip to Brussels in 1599, Archduchess Isabella said of the Grand Place; "Never have I seen something so beautiful and exquisite as the town square of the city where the town hall rises up into the sky. The decoration of the houses is most remarkable". The Grand Place is the main attraction in Brussels for tourists, there is a wide selection of buildings, many terraces to sit and enjoy the surroundings, musicals and concerts happening all year round and, in July, the historical procession, the Ommegang.

Brussels Airport

Brussels Airport, also known as Brussels National, lies approximately 11 kilometres northeast of the Belgian capital.

The airport serves over 18 million passengers every year and has previously been awarded the accolade of Best European Airport by the Airports Council International and International Air Transport Association.

Although Brussels Airport is operated by The Brussels Airport Company, only 25 per cent of the airport is actually owned by the Belgian state, with 75 per cent of the facility belonging to Canadian administrators, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

The airport employs over 20,000 staff, managing over 230,000 aircraft movements from the airport’s 109 gates every year.

Visitors to Brussels Airport will find a range of onsite facilities, including numerous speciality shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. Amenities such as banks, money exchange points and places of worship are available, as is a rail link to Brussels, Antwerp and surrounding destinations.

Passengers can also board trains travelling directly to Paris from this station, located under the airport building.
