Flights to Astana bring travellers to a contemporary capital city, full of modern structures. However, despite only being named Astana in 1998, the city has been known by several different names and has a rich history.

The first major development in the area was a fortress; in time, this developed into the town of Akmolinsk. Under the Soviets, the city adopted the name Tselinograd and played a big part in agriculture. Upon Kazakh independence, officials rechristened the city Akmola, changing it seven years later to Astana.

Today, Astana stands as city full of modern structures, businesses and government activity. Click on ‘view more’ below for a summary of our favourite spots in Astana, helping you to plan an unforgettable visit to the city.

In recent years, many impressive developments have sprung up in Astana. The striking Pyramid of Peace stands out, especially at night, as the 62-metre structure lights up in vibrant colours. Inside, visitors will find a cultural museum, an opera house and accommodation for many different faiths.

Bayterek, possibly Astana's most famous landmark, towers over the city at 105 metres. Built to resemble a tree, Bayterek holds a giant gold globe at its top, representing an egg laid by Simruk (Simurgh), a bird from local folklore.

Other places of interest in Astana include the Atameken Map of Kazakhstan, which lays out the entire country in miniature, and Duman, home to an aquarium and a 3D theatre.

Astana Airport

Astana International Airport is situated only nine miles from Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan.

In 1997 the title of capital officially transferred from the city of Almaty to Astana, making the city an important location for international air travel. In-keeping with Astana's new position as a capital city, a series of reconstructions and upgrades began in 1997 to bring the airport up to international standards.

Many of the renovations, including a new passenger terminal, were designed by the late Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa.

Astana International's two terminals (one domestic, one international) are thought to service more than 1,000,000 passengers per year and handle more than 2,500 metric tonnes in cargo, receiving air traffic and commercial traffic from as far away as Shanghai, Beijing, Russia and Frankfurt.

The airport remains an attractive choice for moving cargo as Astana International currently accepts all types of aircraft without imposing a capped take-off weight.
