Attractions in Melbourne

Melbourne is one of the largest and most popular cities in Australia. The capital of Victoria State, it’s a modern city that attracts many visitors, thanks to its mixture of commerce, history, culture and lifestyle.

Situated on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne was founded in 1835 by settlers from Launceston in Van Diemen's Land (today called Tasmania). The Gold Rush of the 1850s saw Melbourne make its mark on the map as an international city. Thanks to the wealth created from it and the construction boom that followed, Melbourne expanded.

It became prosperous, gained much of its renowned architecture and was labelled by visitors as ‘the jewel of the Southern Hemisphere’. Melbourne became the capital of Australia in 1901 and remained so until 1927.

There's something for everyone taking a holiday in Melbourne. The city is buzzing with theatres, cafes, music festivals, fashion, art galleries and more.

The National Gallery of Victoria is generally regarded as having the best collection of artwork in Australia. It has several key works, including Rembrandt’s ‘Self Portrait’, and regularly hosts exhibitions of collections from around the world. The gallery is split between the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square and NGV International at St Kilda Road. Regular tours and workshops are available and can add a lot to your gallery visit.

In addition, the extremely popular Melbourne Museum is a favourite destination for tourists, with over one million visitors passing through its doors each year. The museum covers a broad base of natural and physical sciences, plus social history and culture.

Exhibits include ‘The Melbourne Story’ which explores the history of the city and ‘Dinosaur Walk,’ an exhibition of the skeletons of the long extinct beasts that once walked the earth. The Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre examines the state of Victoria’s indigenous Koorie culture, whilst the Forest Gallery is a living forest complete with real wildlife. Melbourne Museum is open all year round.

Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport, is the second busiest in Australia, handling around 28 million passengers each year. Located 23km from the city centre, it contains four terminals and 56 gates, 16 of which are international.

Terminal 2 handles all international flights and contains a wide variety of shops and food outlets as well as artwork by notable Australian indigenous artists. The terminal has undergone a $330 million expansion programme to include new lounges and retail facilities, increased luggage capacity and a new satellite terminal featuring floor-to-ceiling views of the North-South runway.

A range of facilities including shops, showers and web access kiosks are located throughout Melbourne airport, although fewer amenities are available in Terminal 4, the first dedicated budget airline terminal in Australia. T4 is, however, located within easy walking distance to the facilities of the airport's other terminals.

Etihad Airways offers access to the Air New Zealand Lounge at Melbourne Airport for our Pearl Business and Diamond First Class guests.
