On flights to Shanghai you will be arriving in the largest city by population in China and the seventh largest metropolis in the world.

Shanghai sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River on the eastern coast of China. Once a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai is now a burgeoning city and centre of commerce between east and west.

The past two decades have seen huge economic growth in the city as it established itself as a leader in finance, commerce, technology, fashion and culture. Shanghai has now set its sights on becoming an international shipping centre.

Holidays in Shanghai are popular because of its high-tech infrastructure and famous historical landmarks, such as The Bund, City God Temple and Yuyuan Garden.

Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are chilly and damp, and summers are hot and humid. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons. Temperatures average 4.2 °C in January and 27.9 °C in July.

Unlike many other Chinese cities, Shanghai is great for walking around. A good start for your own exploration is Fuxing Park. Take a tour guide or go alone for two hours to a whole day to get a feel for the city and its residents.

Visit the Shanghai Museum, located on People's Square, for a glimpse at the nation’s 5,000-year-old history. Take a stroll down Dongtai road, a crowded stretch of antiques and curio shops off Xizang Road, in search of hidden treasures. Go to Moganshan Road for Shanghai's dynamic art scene. And check out the Bund, located by the bank of the Huangpu River, which contains a rich collection of early 20th-century architecture.

No trip to Shanghai is complete without witnessing the skyline in Pudong, a district of Shanghai that has emerged as China's financial and commercial hub.

Shanghai Airport

Shanghai Pudong International is the larger of two airports serving Shanghai, China. Located just 19 miles from down-town Shanghai and handling more than 40.5 million passengers and over 3.5 metric tonnes of cargo a year, Shanghai Pudong is thought to be one of the busiest and most centrally located airports in the world.

Opened in 1999 at the cost of $1.67 billion dollars, the airport is well equipped with two passenger terminals, a cargo terminal and three runways which help to facilitate the arrival and departure of millions of domestic and international travellers as well as cargo, freight and mail.

As more than half of Shanghai Pudong Airport's passenger traffic is made up of international travellers, the airport has a range of conveniences to suit foreign passengers including restaurants and parking.

The airport is also serviced by a high speed train connecting Pudong International with the Longyang Road Metro where a transfer to the city centre via line 2 or 7 can be made.
