Attractions in Cairo

Cairo is located in northern Egypt, known as Lower Egypt, south of the Mediterranean Sea and west of the Gulf of Suez and Suez Canal.

The city is along the Nile River, immediately south of the point where the river leaves its desert-bound valley and branches into the low-lying Nile Delta region. Although the Cairo metropolis extends away from the Nile in all directions, the city of Cairo resides only on the east bank of the river and two islands within it.

Over the ages, and as far back as four thousand years, Egypt stood as the land where civilizations have always met. The Pharaohs together with the Greeks and the Romans have left their imprints here. Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula introduced Islam into Egypt. Khedive Mohammad Ali, with his Albanian family roots, put Egypt on the road to modernity.

If anything, the cultural mix in this country is natural, given its heritage. Egypt can be likened to an open museum with monuments of the different historical periods on display everywhere.

The Egyptian Museum
The Egyptian Museum's collection includes over 120,000 items. One of the major highlights is the famous Pharaoh Tutankhamen tomb collection on the museum's upper floor. The tomb of Tutankhamen was found remarkably intact by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in 1923. Artifacts on display include the gold funerary mask and sarcophagus, four huge gilded boxes that fit inside each other, an ancient trumpet, thrones, and even a royal toilet seat. Also upstairs is the royal Mummy Room, which houses 11 royal mummies from pharaonic times.

Old Cairo
The Coptic Cairo is the oldest part of the city and was once known as the Roman stronghold of Babylon. It is the ancient heart of the Coptic Christian community and although only five of the original 20 churches remain they are interesting to visit, along with the first mosque built in Egypt and the oldest synagogue, a representation of three of the major religions of the modern world. It is a peaceful place to wander around and a respite from the busy city centre.

Cairo Airport

Located about 22km northeast of the city, Cairo Airport is the busiest airport in Egypt and second busiest airport in Africa. In 2009, it served nearly 15 million passengers and handled just under 143,000 aircraft movements.

The airport has three terminals, with the third (and largest) opened on April 27, 2009. Terminal 2 was closed in April 2010 for major renovation works to the building's structure and facilities.

Etihad Airways Diamond First Class and Pearl Business Class passengers can use the facilities in the EAS Lounge and Airport Authority Lounge in Cairo Airport.
