Jakarta is the capital of the Indonesia and its largest city, situated on the island of Java. 

Jakarta begun as a small port in the 14th century which was known as Sunda Kelapa, and based at the mouth of Ciliwung River. 

Its current population is approximately 10 million people spread out over a large urban area. There is much to do in Jakarta from one of the most relaxed nightlife scenes in Asia to shopping at one of the many luxurious shopping centres.

The National Museum (Museum Nasional)
First founded by a group of Dutch collectors, the National Museum of Jakarta boasts more than 100,000 cultural artefacts. There are various collections divided into categories like ethnography, prehistorical artefacts, numismatic & heraldic, archaeology, geography, ceramics and historical relics. Museum Nasional is more popularly known as the 'Elephant Building' due to the stone elephant standing on the front lawn which was a gift from King Chulalongkorn of Thailand in 1871.

Central Jakarta
Central Jakarta occupies the smallest area among the five cities of Jakarta. It's most impressive structure is the neo-gothic building that was inaugurated in 1901, called St Mary's Cathedral. Near to the Cathedral is a mosque with one of the tallest towers in Jakarta. Don't forget, also, to visit the National Monument standing at over 135 metres high and visible from far off in the city's avenues. There is a lift that takes tourists to the top of the structure.

Jakarta Airport

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, also referred to as Cengkareng Airport, is located on the Indonesian island of Java, approximately 20 kilometres west of Jakarta. 

The airport is named after Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia and his vice-president, Mohammad Hatta. Ranked as one of the busiest airports in Asia, as well as the 12th busiest airport in the world, a major expansion project is currently taking place at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. This work, due to be completed in 2014, will extend the capacity of Jakarta's main airport to 62 million passengers per year. 

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has previously been named amongst the world's most punctual airports and has also been awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. 

Passengers can enjoy the well-maintained traditional gardens located at various points throughout the terminal buildings, as well as an 18-hole golf course set within the grounds of the airport. A range of onsite facilities are also available, including a new shopping arcade containing a number of specialist retail outlets.
