Tehran is the largest city in Iran and its capital. Tehran boasts the most highways in Western Asia providing easy access to most areas surrounding the city at the foot of the Tochai Mountain.

With a population of over 8 million people Tehran is one of Iran's largest urban locations. Tehran is predominantly associated with industry and has many manufacturing companies based there including ones providing chemical products, sugar, electrical equipment, textiles, cement, military weaponry and automobiles.


Tehran is also famous for its variety of resorts including palace complexes, large museums, art centres and the Alborz slopes. The city also houses Zoroastrian fire temples, churches, historic mosques and synagogues.

National Jewels Treasury
The National Jewels Treasury is a collection of the most exclusive and expensive jewels in the world. The jewels have been selected from the last 25 centuries of Iranian history, most of them originating from the peace times of the country when the rulers would spend a considerable amount of effort in creating and obtaining the finest jewels and sorting them into personal collections and decorations. The Diamond of Darya-e Noor (Sea of Light), one of the largest diamonds in the world, is on display at the treasury.

National Museum of Iran
The National Museum of Iran has a total floor space of more than 20,000 sq metres, containing over 300,000 museum artefacts. The museum is acclaimed worldwide for its quality, diversity and volume of artefacts. There are four main sections to the museum; Numismatics, Islamic, Historic and Loristan, and Prehistoric. Inaugurated in 1937, the oldest artefact in the museum comes from sites at Ganj Par, Darband and Kashafrud.

Tehran Airport

Imam Khomeini International Airport is located in Ahmadabad, Iran, approximately 30 kilometres southwest of the capital city of Tehran. The airport is the largest in the country and was named in honour of Ruhollah Khomeini, the late Iranian religious leader and politician.  

The newly built Imam Khomeini International Airport serves around 6.5 million passengers every year and spans over 135 square kilometres. A master development plan is in place, with a number of phases designed to increase the airport's capacity to accommodate up to 90 million travellers per year. 

The airport contains a dedicated Hajj terminal, which caters for the influx of passengers travelling to Saudi Arabia for the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. The airport contains a number of passenger amenities including restaurants and coffee shops, wireless internet, a postal service, banks, currency exchange outlets and a number of shops offering local and international products.
