Attractions in Erbil

Erbil has a rich culture dating back to around 6,000 BC. UNESCO has considered the oldest part of the city, the Erbil Citadel, as a World Heritage Site, and visitors will note it as a prominent part of the city. The Erbil Citadel stands 32 metres above the rest of the city and contains public buildings and homes, making it unique among similar citadels.

Over the course of history, Erbil emerged as an important centre among many empires, serving as capital of the Adiabene Kingdom and the Assyrian province of the Roman Empire. Erbil would in turn also be part of the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates, and the Ottoman Empire.

Sights of Erbil

The Erbil Citadel is perhaps the most famous sight in the city, but Erbil also has many other sites documenting its long history. The Mound of Qalich Agha, where excavators found many prehistoric tools, can be found at the Museum of Civilization.

The Mudhafaria Minaret, dating to the 12th century AD, can be found at Minaret Park and the Qaysari Bazaar offers a unique shopping experience just south of the Erbil Citadel. For a grand display of Kurdish weavings, simply visit the Kurdish Textile Museum.

Erbil Airport

Opened in 2012, Erbil International Airport is the principal airport of Kurdistan, Northern Iraq.

As the region has seen strong economic growth thanks in part to its wealth of gas, oil and natural mineral resources, Erbil has become an increasingly important international airport for trade and business passenger traffic.

Over $550 million was spent by foreign investors constructing Erbil airport, creating a large and contemporary airport terminal that currently services more than 600,000 passengers per year and expects to service many more in future given that the airport has one of the world's fastest growing passenger traffic rates.

Facilities at this modern airport include duty free shops, currency exchange outlets, an airport lounge, mobile roaming internet connectivity and a separate VIP terminal for visiting dignitaries and import ant persons. Erbil International also boasts one of the world's longest runways at 4,800 metres long and 90 metres wide.
