Attractions in Tripoli

Tripoli has been considered an important world city for several millennia. Founded by the Phoenician civilisation in the seventh century BC, it has since come under the rule of the Greeks and Romans, in addition to the Mamluk and Fatimid caliphates.

With such a rich and deep-rooted history, there are numerous ancient ruins and historical sites for visitors to explore in Tripoli, much of which have been unspoiled by mass tourism.

However, while celebrating its heritage, Tripoli is establishing itself as a modern city. Today, it serves as the capital of Libya, hosting much of the country’s banking, finance, manufacturing and communication activities. Covering around 400 square kilometres, it’s also the largest city in Libya, with an approximate population of 2.2 million people.

More About Attractions in Tripoli

While modern attractions such as the zoo, planetarium and water sport facilities are popular in Tripoli, the Libyan capital is most famous for its ancient landmarks. A visit to Tripoli Medina, for example, will transport you to a historical walled city that originally shielded the local community against attacks and invasions during Roman occupation. Explore its narrow aisles to find stunning mosques, bustling markets (‘souks’) and elaborate houses, each offering a unique backdrop to holiday photos.

A number of important sites are located on the outskirts of Tripoli Medina too, such as Red Castle (Assaraya al-Hamra). The impressive complex includes a 10,000 square metre national museum, established in 1919, which is considered one of the world’s most important museums due to its unique collection of artefacts, from marble and stone statues to grave covers and tombs, plus a range of dinosaur bones and fossils.

Leptis Magna is another well-known attraction, located around 130km east of Tripoli. This unspoilt collection of Roman Ruins has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was founded by Phoenicians a few centuries before Tripoli. It became one of Africa's most important cities under the Roman emperor Tiberius and although Leptis Magna was abandoned centuries later, prominent features - such as the marketplace, theatre and basilica - have been preserved, making it a must-see while in Tripoli.

Tripoli Airport

Tripoli International Airport is located in the town of Ben Ghashir, approximately 34 kilometres south of Tripoli’s city centre.

As the busiest airport in Libya, all domestic and international flights are operated from a single terminal with the capacity to handle around three million passengers each year. However, an expansion plan has been launched by the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to increase the annual capacity to 20 million passengers, with the construction of two passenger terminals, together with a new cargo terminal, control tower, runway, hotel accommodation and other facilities.

A number of onsite facilities are available within the five-floor terminal building at Tripoli International Airport, including duty free retail outlets, a premium-class lounge, prayer rooms, restaurants and cafes, currency exchange and car rental services.
