Attractions in Muscat

Muscat is the capital and biggest city in Oman. The population of Muscat is estimated to be in excess of one million people. The region of Muscat spans approximately 1500 square kilometres and the city is situated on the Gulf of Oman, near to the Straits of Hormuz.

Muscat is considered to be a very important port town for the Gulf of Oman and has attracted many foreign investors and settlers due to the ease of shipping, in and out, of the city. Some of the settlers who have come to Muscat over the years include the Gujaratis, Persians and the Balochis. Qaboos bin Said was appointed Sultan of Oman in 1970 and ensured Muscat sped up development of infrastructure resulting in the city becoming an economical and cultural hub for Oman.

National Museum of Muscat
The National Museum of Muscat was known before as the Museum of the House of Sayyid Nadir Bin Faysal Bin Turki. The museum is run and maintained by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. Divided into several exhibitions and halls, the museum shows off a catalogue of ancient artefacts from the Muscat region including copper, pendants, jewellery and bangles. The most popular items in the museum are those belonging to Al Sayyidah Salimah Bint Said Bin Sultan.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the third largest mosque in the world and almost the entire complex is made up of non-Muslim visitors. There are many different items to see in the mosque including lovely marble panelling fixed into the floors and roof of the building, the second largest handmade Persian rug and the famous Swarovski crystal chandelier donated to the museum as a tribute to the original persons who founded the mosque.

Muscat Airport

Seeb Airport, also known as Muscat International Airport, is located around 32 kilometres from the capital and is the largest airport in Oman.  

Seeb Airport, the main hub for national carrier Oman Air, handles around 6.5 million passengers and 70,000 aircraft movements every year, serving 54 destinations across 27 countries. 

The airport currently has one terminal, with another under construction. Once completed, Seeb Airport will have a capacity of around 12 million passengers a year, with a further three-stage expansion planned, allowing for a capacity of up to 48 million passengers per year if required. In addition to the passenger terminal, a separate VIP building is located on the premises, designed exclusively for the use of high ranking dignitaries. 

Seeb Airport contains a variety of passenger amenities including foreign currency exchange outlets, three premium lounges, a choice of cafes, restaurants and chain outlets and a number of retailers and duty free shops.
