Attractions in Moscow

Tourists often flock to Red Square in Moscow, which is surrounded by a number of world-renowned landmarks. St Basil’s Cathedral, for example, stands apart from other architectural work in Russia and perhaps the world, with colourful spires that have been designed to resemble flames rising into the sky. Originally constructed in the 16th century, the cathedral has emerged as one of the country’s most famous attractions.

The Moscow Kremlin, which also overlooks Red Square, contains four cathedrals and four palaces within its historical walls, plus a museum where guests can learn more about Russian history. It is located across from Russia’s State Historical Museum, one of the most comprehensive museums in the world, with more than four million artefacts. Many of the items can be traced back to the prehistoric tribes of the Moscow region, while others hail from medieval times and the days of the Russian Empire.

Other leading museums in Moscow include the Museum of the Great Patriotic War, offering a unique insight into the country’s role in World War II, while the Kremlin Armoury contains a diverse range of weapons and royal treasures from imperial Russia.

Moscow has also been associated with stage plays, ballet and opera programmes for many years. The city's most famous venue, the 19th-century Bolshoi Theatre, hosts its own ballet and opera companies, plus a prestigious school dedicated to ballet dancing. For further exploration into the arts, head to the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, home to some of the city's largest collections.
