Manchester is located in the north-west of England, about 320km from London, close to the Pennines, a range of hills that stretches from the very north of England to Derbyshire. As one of the UK’s major cities, it has plenty to offer both business travellers and holiday-makers.

Manchester’s origins date back to Roman times, when a fort was constructed there, but it became a settlement during the Middle Ages. Its transformation into one of England’s largest cities was thanks to the role that it played during the Industrial Revolution, when it became a centre for the manufacture of textiles. It’s also now known for its music scene, and as the home of Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs.

Museums
Culture lovers will enjoy exploring the museums, which include the Museum of Science and Industry and the Imperial War Museum North. You can view both historic and contemporary works at the Manchester Art Gallery, and it’s also worth visiting the Lowry Centre at Salford Quays, which houses two theatres together with galleries, and exhibits work by contemporary artists as well as art by L S Lowry, who lived and worked in the city.

Manchester is also known for its shops, and you’ll find everything from large shopping centres to small independent stores. The Arndale Centre is the largest inner-city shopping centre in the UK and has more than 200 stores, as well as cafes and restaurants. For a more unusual gift, try the Manchester Craft & Design Centre a covered market in the Northern Quarter, where you can buy jewellery, clothing, paintings and ceramics directly from the people who created them.

Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport is the third busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the largest in the country out with London.  

The airport, opened in 1938, is owned and operated by the Manchester Airports Group and is located 13.9 km south west of Manchester city centre. 

Manchester Airport is one of only two British airports that have two runways over 3000 metres in length. It contains three terminals and is currently undergoing major expansion, with refurbishment of the retail and security areas of all three terminals already completed. 

Terminals 1 and 2 are connected by a skylink, which also connects the airport to a railway station and hotel. Terminal 3, which mostly services domestic routes, is connected to Terminal 1 by a covered walkway. 

Manchester Airport includes a range of onsite facilities including dedicated business amenities, free internet access in all terminals and two multi-faith prayer rooms. The airport also offers shower facilities and a spa, as well as a plethora of shopping, drinking and dining options.
