Attractions in Kozhikode

Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is a port city on the west coast of India. Situated in the Indian state of Kerala, on the Arabian Sea and below the Wayanad Hills, it’s close to beautiful countryside, beaches and several historic sites.

Originally part of the Chera Empire, one of the area’s claims to fame is that the Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gamma, landed at Kappad, just outside of Kozhikode. As a result of the discovery of this new sea route, Kozhikode became a major trading post for spices and, during the Middle Ages, the city became known as ‘The City of Spices’. Kozhikode has been colonized by the Dutch, British and Portuguese and these international influences can still be seen in much of its architecture.

Mananchira Square
Mananchira Square, once the main courtyard of the Palace of the Zamorin (a 13th century ruler), lies at the heart of Calicut. Today it is surrounded by the Town Hall and Public Library, as well as mosques, churches and a large reservoir. The centre of the square has been developed into a beautiful park, complete with a musical fountain and an open-air theatre.

Pazhassirajah Museum
Pazhassirajah Museum, run by the Kerala State Archaeological Department, is located in the East Hill area of the city and showcases many local discoveries. These include umbrella stones, mural paintings, ancient coins and antique bronzes. Next to the museum is the Art Gallery, which exhibits the works of Keralan painter Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906).

Kozhikode Airport

Also known as Karipur Airport, Calicut International Airport is the principal airport serving the city of Kozhikode in Kerala, India.

Although the airport is the ninth busiest airport in India overall, it is the seventh busiest in terms of international traffic volumes.

Calicut International Airport largely connects the city with destinations in the Middle East popular especially with residents of North Kerala who work abroad in the emirate.

The airport currently handles over 2 million passengers per year, most of whom are international travellers. The airport was the subject of a billion-rupee upgrade which resulted in its being awarded international airport status in 2006.

As part of the extensive refurbishments carried out, Calicut airport now operates an automated inline baggage system; improved parking facilities; conveyor belts and steel chairs to transport passengers across the extensive terminal grounds; and automated boarding and un-boarding aerobridges.

The airport has also been upgraded for passenger comfort with available facilities now including fast food outlets, cyber cafes and jewellery and handicraft retailers.
