About Nigeria

A trip to Nigeria is a trip to Africa’s most populous nation and the seventh most populous in the world with some 170 million people residing there. Nigeria accounts for nearly 20 percent of all Africa’s population.

Officially known as the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the country is located in West Africa and borders Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east and Niger in the north. Its southern coast runs along the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic Ocean.

Nigeria has a long history, with archaeological evidence suggesting settlements existed as far back as 9,000 BC. Over time many different ethnic groups have migrated to this resource rich land. On holiday in Nigeria you cannot help but notice the diversity of ethnic groups, particularly in the middle belt area of the country.

The Fulani/Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo are the three largest ethnic groups, accounting for around 62 percent of the population, while the Edo, Ijaw, Kanuri, Ibibio, Ebira, Nupe, Gwari, Itsekiri, Jukun, Urhobo, Igala, Idoma and Tiv make up about a third and other minorities make up the remaining 5 percent. Though many of these ethnic groups have their own language or dialect, English is the official language of the country. And while belief in traditional religious practices is widespread, estimates suggest that 50 percent of Nigerians are Muslims and 50 percent Christians.

Nigeria is a constitutional republic made up of 36 states. Its capital is Abuja, though Lagos is the largest city in the country and is where Etihad flights to Nigeria land.

There are a whole host of things to do when on holiday in Nigeria. Activities can generally be divided into exploring the country’s rich history, marvelling its natural wonders and enjoying its diverse cultures.

Nigeria has a spectacular selection of homemade crafts. On Lagos Island, the National Museum at Onikan houses a wide range of exhibits of Nigeria's ancient civilisations. Also on Lagos Island, the Jankara Market is a great place to bargain for locally dyed cotton, handwoven cloth, herbs and leather goods. In the southwest of the country, the market in Ibadan is said to be one of the biggest in Nigeria.

Many of those taking flights to Nigeria head to the countryside to visit mountains, waterfalls, national parks and nature reserves. Akure is an ideal place to explore the seven Olumirin Waterfalls.

For wildlife, Yankari National Park is one of the best of a few options. On a good day you can see buffaloes, waterbucks, bushbucks, hyenas, leopards, plenty of baboons and the occasional lion. The Lake Kainji National Park in Kwara State is also excellent for a variety of wildlife.

Adventure seekers on trips to Nigeria can opt to climb Chappal Waddi, Nigeria’s highest mountain at 2,419 metres. More relaxed options are to picnic along the shores of the Azumini River, unwind at the warm springs of Wikki or visit the town of Calabar, which offers fantastic views from its high position above the Calabar River.
