A number of historical sites are found in Jordan, the most popular of which is Petra. Established by the Nabataeans in the early 1st century, this ancient city once served as a flourishing urban centre, after being carved into the pink-reddish rocks of a mountain.

To enter the ruins, visitors must venture down a narrow gorge, measuring around 1.25km in length. Once inside, there is a stunning collection of obelisks, temples, colonnaded streets and, if you climb up 800 steps, there’s even a sacred monastery. Petra was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and has even featured in Hollywood blockbuster ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’, starring Harrison Ford.

Another popular landmark in Jordan is the Dead Sea, which is located 402 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point on earth. Here, the warm waters are ten times saltier than sea water, and rich in chloride salts of magnesium, sodium, potassium, bromine and several others. As a result, bathers that lie back in the Dead Sea will actually float on the water surface, rather than sink down. Also, the water properties are considered to have medicinal benefits, making the area a major centre of health and wellness in the region, attracting massive crowds of local residents and tourists.
