Officially called the Republic of Maldives, and also known as the Maldive Islands, the country consists of 1,192 islands, of which 200 are inhabited. Essentially, these islands are the tips of a vast undersea mountain range. 

The Maldives stand in the crystal-clear Laccadive Sea, about 700km southwest of Sri Lanka and 400km southwest of India. The country is the smallest in Asia, in both population and area. The Maldives is also the lowest country in the world, with an average ground level of just 1.5 metres above sea level, and has the lowest high point in the world at just 2.3 metres.
