Baggage allowances and charges

Guests travelling or transiting through UAE airports will have to follow new hand (cabin) baggage regulations, scheduled to come into effect soon.
• Carry all liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre.
• Each Guest may carry only one such bag, which must be presented separately from other cabin baggage at security screening checkpoints.
• The contents of no container must exceed 100 millilitres of LAGs.
• Exceptions may be made for medications, baby milk/foods and special dietary or other medical requirements.

• Present your transparent re-sealable plastic bag containing liquids, aerosols and gels separately at security checkpoints.
• Take off your jackets and/or coats and present these for screening. 
• Present laptops and other large electronic equipment for screening separately.

• Carry LAG items purchased at airport retail outlets or on board the aircraft in a Security Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB). Generally, these bags are provided by the retail outlet where the LAG is purchased.
• To avoid confiscation, the security tamper-evident bag should not be opened before going through security checkpoints. 
• If transiting between airports, do not open the bag until you pass through the final security checkpoint at your last airport of transit.
• Most retail outlets at major international airports now comply with the new regulations. However, if items purchased at other airports do not fulfil the new requirements, these may be confiscated at Abu Dhabi International Airport before departure.

• Water, drinks, soups, syrups, jams, stews, sauces and pastes.
• Foods in sauces or containing a high liquid content. 
• Creams, lotions, cosmetics and oils, perfumes, sprays, gels, including hair and shower gel.
• Contents of pressurized containers, including shaving foam and deodorants.
• Pastes including toothpaste, liquid-solid mixtures, mascara, lip gloss or lip balm and any item of similar consistency at room temperature.

Remember, these restrictions only apply to cabin baggage — you could still pack your liquids, aerosols and gels in your checked baggage if you wish to.

Guests travelling from or transiting through European airports are requested to kindly follow the new EU cabin baggage norms that came into effect on November 6, 2006.

These norms are applicable to cabin baggage carried by:
• Guests transiting through an EU airport 
• Guests departing from an EU airport 
• Guests travelling to/from Toronto/Brussels.

As per the new norms:
• All liquids, gels, pastes, pressurised containers must be carried in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre.
• The contents of no container must exceed 100 millilitres.
• These items must be presented separately from other cabin baggage at security screening check points.
• Duty free products bought from non-EU duty-free shops or onboard sales will not be accepted as carry-on baggage.

Guests travelling through Australian airports have to follow new guidelines governing hand baggage contents, particularly liquids, gels, aerosols, etc.

Etihad’s Guests travelling to New York are requested to follow the new cabin baggage norms for US-bound flights:
• All liquids, gels, pastes, pressurised containers must be carried in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre.
• The contents of no container must exceed 100 millilitres.
• These items should be presented separately from other cabin baggage at security screening check points.
• Duty-free products will be accepted only if they have been purchased at Abu Dhabi International Airport or on board the aircraft from Abu Dhabi to New York.

The following are classified as carry-on items, and can be taken on the flight in addition to your carry-on luggage allocation. Please note these should be stowed under the seat where permitted:

• Handbag, pocket book or purse
• Overcoat, wrap or blanket
• Umbrella or walking stick
• Small camera and / or binoculars
• A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight
• Collapsible wheelchair / crutches
• Braces or prosthetic devices (provided the guest is dependent on them)
• Briefcase or portable PC which is not being used as a container for transportation of articles, regarded as baggage — exception: laptop - not to be activated without flight crew knowledge / concurrence
• Mobile phone — exception: not to be utilized during flight.

We understand that it’s not always easy to pack within your weight limit. For an additional charge you can increase the amount of luggage you can take on your flight. Alternatively, you can send your extra weight for a reduced cost through Crystal Cargo.

1. Calculate the cost per kilogram. This is based on the length of your flight. Firstly, find out the Zone for your origin and your destination in the table below. For example, if I travel from Morocco (Africa) to Japan I am travelling from Zone 2 to Zone 3.

2. Refer to the below table to understand the cost per extra kilogram you wish to take. Zone 2 to Zone 3 will incur a charge of US $70 for each extra kilogram you wish to take. Taking a 5kg bag will incur a cost of US $350.

Exception - Singapore/Brisbane: If you are travelling from Singapore to Brisbane, or Brisbane to Singapore your luggage will be charged at the rate of US $30 per kg.

Exception - Beijing/Nagoya: If you are travelling from Beijing to Nagoya, or Nagoya to Beijing, your excess baggage will be charged at the rate of US $15 per kg.

The Australian Government has implemented security restrictions which limit the quantity of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGS) that passengers may take on-board the aircraft for flights to Australia.

These restrictions do not apply to checked-in baggage.

In general, the only liquids, aerosols and gels that are allowed in a passenger's carry-on baggage are:

• Liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of 100 milliliters or less, in one transparent re-sealable bag. The four sides of the re-sealable area should not add up to more than 80cm (e.g. 20x20cm or 15x25cm).

Passengers are not permitted to have liquids, aerosols and gels in their carry-on baggage in excess of these restrictions.

If you are on a connecting flight to Australia via Abu Dhabi, and have liquids, aerosols and gels as carry-on baggage in excess of the permitted quantities, they may be confiscated by the Abu Dhabi Airport Authorities during security checks at the transfer point or boarding gate.

To avoid disappointment, it is recommended that Duty Free liquids, aerosols and gels in excess of the approved quantities are purchased on board the aircraft during your flight from Abu Dhabi to Australia.

Etihad Guests can pre-pay for excess baggage via the Airport Ticketing Office (ATO), City Ticketing Office (CTO) and Call Centre (within the UAE: 02 599 0000; outside the UAE: +971 2 599 0844). The Excess Baggage Vouchers (Airline Ancillary Service) will be issued as an Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD) and can be purchased for 5kg, 10kg, 15kg, 20KG, 25kg, 30kg & 35kg, as per the conditions below.

1. Available for sale from the time of booking until 24 hours prior to departure
2. Only available on Etihad-operated flights 
3. Offered at a 10% discounted rate from the applicable airport excess baggage rates 
4. Sold on the premise of:
    a. use it or lose it 
    b. no refund for partial use. For example: a guest has 5kg excess prepaid and only requires 3kg 
5. EMD can be issued for weight concept, piece concept or a combination of both where applicable 
6. Guests can be issued multiple EMDs for one segment. For example, 1st EMD for weight and 2nd EMD for piece
